Great Christmas Gift: Pick and Draw Game {Review & Giveaway}

Introduction: Rich Davis is the talented illustrator who created Pick and Draw. You might recognize his work from the following children's books:  Firefighters to the Rescue (one of Jonathan's favorites!), Scat, Cats!, When Tiny Was Tiny, Tiny's Bath, Tiny Goes to the Library, Tiny the Snow Dog, Tiny Goes Camping, and Tiny on the Farm.

Pick and Draw

Rich originally created Pick and Draw to be used in his presentations to kids at public libraries and schools. However, when he saw how much the kids enjoyed the game and how engaged they became in the creative process, he decided that Pick and Draw should be available to more than just the people he met at presentations.

What is Pick and Draw? (from the Pick and Draw website)

  • Pick and Draw is a fun, one-of-a-kind drawing game that teaches you how to make very creative cartoon faces.
  • There are 60,000 different possibilities in the game (a deck of cards).
  • The game uses mainly simple shapes everyone already knows how to do thereby giving confidence to those who try.
  • It is simple and easy to use providing endless hours of fun and learning. In five minutes or less you will know how to play.
  • It can be used by one person or by any group number.
  • It also opens up creative thinking and using the imagination.
  • This makes “success” possible providing a good kind of confidence to encourage continued learning.
Pick and Draw also:
:: develops decision making skills
:: promotes fine motor skills
:: encourages creative thinking
:: works on comparing and contrasting
:: is a great storytelling tool
:: is small and easily mobile, and
:: is an inexpensive gift for families and children of all ages.

Pick and Draw can even be with Sunday School classes and Youth Groups when combined with Rich's 10 Heart Messages.

Review: Rich generously sent us a copy of Pick and Draw to review. I was a little concerned that our kids would be far too young to play the game, but Rich gave me some ideas for using this game with even very young children. So far, we've used the Pick and Draw cards in our preschool workboxes and I've used them in some one-on-one time with Emahry.

To play you simply pick one card from each category: Face, Nose, Eyes, Mouth, and Hair. Then you draw each piece to make a unique cartoon face. Depending on the size and placement of each component the face can look completely different than another face drawn using the same exact cards. Try out a hand of the game online by clicking on "Click here to try it!"

Learn how to play Rick and Draw!

Here's one of Emahry and Jonathan's creations alongside one of mine using the same five cards.

After we make our faces, we've been talking about them, giving them names and telling each other what they like to do. This is great practice for story telling and later story writing. Emahry and Jonathan have been coming up with some very funny stories.

We're even planning on taking Pick and Draw to my parents' house the next time the family gets together for some whole family fun. I know it'll be great!

Pick and Draw may even be going into some family gift baskets this Christmas. It's a great gift for families and children of all ages!
