The Beginning Reader's Bible Review

The Beginning Reader's Bible

From the Publisher:

This exceptionally illustrated Bible storybook allows children to read the story, pray to God, and grow closer to Him.

Using actual Bible text from the International Children's Bible® as well as prayers, memory verses, and fun activities, children will love this large format and be engrossed in the intricate detail of the illustrations. Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments are included and stories are accompanied by a prayer for the child to pray, a verse to memorize, and a fun activity to help them grow.

Our Review:

When this Bible storybook arrived the first thing that caught our attention were the beautiful illustrations. Each page is very detailed and just wonderful. The colors are rich and the illustrations, while animated are not overly cartoony.

The book contains 26 stories from the Old and New Testament and additional resources, such as prayers from the Bible, books of the Bible and the ten commandments. Most of the stories are the "big" ones such as Noah, David and Goliath and the Prodigal Son. However, a few lesser recognized stories are also included.

Each story includes three extra features entitled, "Remember God's Word," "Pray God's Word" and "Do God's Word." These sections are a memory verse, related prayer and application discussion.

The stories are comprised of versus taken from the International Children's Bible. We liked that they were not simply retellings on a children's level, but we may prefer a different translation.

I do think the title is a bit misleading as this is not actually a full translation of the Bible, but simply isolated stories. Also, although the stories are condensed and the scriptures are take from the ICB this would not be something that a beginning reader could read successfully on their own.

However, if you are looking for a Bible storybook that does not add to the scriptures (such as Zacchaeus needing a ladder to get up into the tree) than this may be perfect for your family.

Our children have been thoroughly enjoying a nightly story with Daddy.

This book was provided for review by Tyndale House Publishers. No other compensation was given.

List It, Link It ~ My Evernote List

I recently downloaded the free version of Evernote and have been using it to store all kinds of things I find on the web. I love the hightlight and clip feature and also being able to add tags and notes to what I save. I also love how easy it is to find things I've saved through Evernote, no more trying to remember what I saved something under in my Favorites or Bookmarks.

10 Things I Clipped to Evernote this Week

1. Peek-a-Boo Toy Sack Tutorial @ make it perfect

2. Food Face Plate @ a bird and a bean

3. Silk Dyed Easter Eggs @ Our Best Bites

4. Bubble Wrap Hopscotch @ Giver's Log

5. Button Board @ Tired, Need Sleep

6. Free ABC Printable Art @ kind over matter

9. Kid's Artwork to Embroidery @ Nurturing the tender years

Colors Clank Can

I saw the idea of a "clink can" on Carissa's blog earlier this week and began saving metal lids left and right. Then I tracked down the original source on Making Learning Fun

So, what is a clank can? It's simply a metal bottomed can (recycled from our pantry) in which our kids drop metal lids to make them clank. You can place all types of concepts on the lids for review.

Right now we're using the clank can to practice color identification with Jonathan and reinforce Emahry's knowledge of colors.

To make the can, simply find a metal can with a plastic lid or a can with cardboard sides and a metal bottom. I covered the can in white cardstock that I had already "decorated". Then cut a slit in the lid.

Now collect lots of metal can lids. You can use the metal lids that are on juice concentrate cans. You can also you regular metal jar lids if you have a can opener that take the entire lid off so there are no sharp edges. We don't have this type of can opener, but our neighbor does and was gracious enough to let us borrow it.

You can then attach your concept pieces with clear contact paper, packaging tape or even regular invisible tape.

To play: Lay out all the metal lids face up and ask your child to find a certain color, number, shape, sight word, etc. Then have them drop it through the slit in the top of the clank can.

Here are some ideas for different ways you can use your new clank can:
~ colors
~ numbers
~ shapes
~ sightwords
~ letters
~ days of the week
~ cause and effect
~ story interaction (check out all the great ideas and printables here

Do you have any other ideas for using this simple, but interactive homemade manipulative? We'd love your ideas.

Tools For Tots

Our new clank can works for me!

Mama Runs with Scissors: Review & Giveaway {closed}

Introduction: Mama Runs with Scissors is the creative outlet of Jen, a stay-at-home mama to two boys. Jen loves to make her customers happy by providing high quality items. Over the past two years she has turned her passion for sewing into a full time job.

Selection: Mama Runs with Scissors is filled with KooL KiD LegS (leg/arm warmers) and coordinating onesies, shirts, skirts and tutu.

Here are just a few of my favorites.

Review: We were blessed to receive this awesome pair of bike KooL KiD LegS for Eliya (& baby #4).

Jen's KooL KiD LegS arrive neatly folded, tied with an attached tag and ready for giving (or keeping).

I love how bold and fun these leg warmers are. They are also very well made and stay up around Eliya's little thighs perfectly.

These are also Jonathan's favorite leg warmers. Whenever he gets new leg warmers for Eliya, these are the first pair he looks for. He's even brought them to me out of the hamper.

These leg warmers are approximately 14 inches long and will fit most newborns to preteens. KooL KiD LegS make great fashion statements and are also very functional as extra warmth under pants and skirts. They also look adorable with onesies and make diaper changes so easy.

Right now we're loving these KooL KiD LegS as Eliya cruises through our hardwood floored house on her little baby knees.

Connect:  Keep up with Mama Runs with Scissors Etsy Shop, Blog and Facebook page.

Buy It: You can purchase your own KooL KiD LegS from Mama Runs with Scissors for only $8. There are also discounts for buying multiple pairs. (Prices do not include s&h.)

List It, Link It ~ Favorite Educational YouTube Videos

Our two oldest (3 1/2 and 2 1/2) love watching movies. It probably has something to do with the fact that we don't own a T.V. and they rarely get to sit and watch a full length movie.

However, we have found that YouTube has a vast array of educational video, especially for preschool aged children. This list contains some of our current favorites.

Our (Current) Favorite Educational YouTube Videos

3. Days of the Week Song (to the tune of The Addam's Family)

Do you have any favorite educational YouTube video? Please, share in the comments.

A Little Surprise!

This past week we mailed out envelopes to our three sets of parents. Inside was a little secret. Curious?

Well, we have an envelope for you, too.

See...

Sorry, I couldn't wait for you to open it.

Go ahead pull out what's inside...

Are you surprised yet?

Want a close-up of the photo? (I think those are some really cute kiddos.)

Notice anything? (Other than the fact that I'm letting my baby chew on the balloon string.)

Take a look at the note.

Go ahead...follow directions.

Now take a closer look.

Even closer.

SURPRISE!

Menu Plan Monday ~ February 14th

Review of Last Week's New Recipe(s):

Crock Pot BBQ Pulled Pork

I made this with a Bone in Pork Butt instead of a Boneless Pork Shoulder. The bone part was because that was all I could find. The butt part was because I switched out the package I had to get one a little smaller and accidentally picked up a butt (that's an odd sentence to type).

The bone ended up being no problem at all. I simple removed it when I pulled the pork out to shred.

The butt, I believe, ended up having a little more fat that had to be trimmed off in the beginning and also during the shredding process.

The flavor of this pulled pork was delicious! We served it over brown rice. It made 2 meals plus a little extra for our family of 2 adults and 3 little ones. All of the kids (ages 3 1/2, 2 1/2 & 1) loved it!

This Week's Menu:

Monday: Nothing fancy here today since we went out as a family on Saturday and Tim will be at a seminar all day. Leftover Papa Murphy's Pizza

Wednesday: Crock Pot Black Beans & Rice ~ no recipe really, just 2 cans black beans (rinsed), brown rice + enough chicken stock to cook rice, 1 can diced tomatoes, minced garlic and spices. So easy, but our family really likes it.

Thursday: Leftovers

FridayBroiled Tilapia with pasta and Parmesan sauce (didn't get to this last week)

Saturday: Pancakes, Cheesy Scrambled Eggs & Bacon

Sunday: Grilled Steak Fajitas (Tim is longing to fire up the grill!)

Chic Hearts Chalkboard / Blackboard Wall Art Decal

It's hard to believe the amount of choices available, but here are several more of our favorites from The Vinyl Chalkboard. Remember all of these designs are now available in dry erase (whiteboard) vinyl as well.

Review: We were blessed to receive a set of flower chalkboard decals from The Vinyl Chalkboard.

We love these decals! They were really easy to apply. In fact the hardest part was deciding where to put them.

We finally decided to incorporate them into our living room since that is where our children play. (If they play where they can't be seen, a mess is sure to ensue.)

Emahry and Jonathan (3 1/2 and 2 1/2) really enjoy their new chalkboards. I think they like being able to draw on the wall. My husband and I love having their artwork easily displayed. I also like how easy it is to clean the decals with a damp rag and have them looking brand new again.

Connect:  Keep up with The Vinyl Chalkboard's Etsy Shop and Facebook page.

Buy It: You can purchase your own vinyl chalkboard or dry erase decals from The Chalkboard Decal. Prices range based on decal size. Labels start at only $7.99 for sets of 9. The majority of full sized decals including the one we reviewed are priced at $29. (Prices do not include s&h.)

Win It: The Chalkboard Decal has offered a decal to one of our readers. The winner can choose any design up to $30 with free s&h. This giveaway is open to those living in the continental U.S.
