Bacon Without Paper Towels

Our family has chosen not to purchase paper towels as a way to cut back on expenses and waste. We normally don't even miss paper towels except when we cook bacon. We've been on a bacon kick recently and I've been searching for a way to get rid of some of the grease before we put the bacon in our mouths.

I've read to let the bacon soak on brown paper bags, but we don't use these either, so that option doesn't work for us. We've finally found a solution that doesn't require us to thrown anything away when we're done. We simply place the bacon on a wire cooling rack when it is finished cooking. I also like to flip it once so both sides can drip. This method works relatively well. It doesn't get rid of all the grease, but a good amount drips off.

Just make sure you place the rack on top of a plate or cookie sheet, so you don't end up with a greasy counter-top.

(smacking forehead) Great idea!!! I can't believe this has never occurred to me...

We don't purchase paper towels, either, or napkins. So, I quit making bacon for awhile, lol, but now we can have it again! I thank you, and my bacon-lovin' men thank you too, LOL!

Have a lovely day!

That is a good idea! We don't do bacon much, but when I cook sausage I put it in my strainer over a bowl in a my sink. We don't buy paper towels either and I had to come up with an alternative method! :-)

I use a similar method. I use the spatter screen for the frying pan and just rest the screen back on the pan I fryed the bacon in.

I keep thinking I should give you a call just to see how you are doing and if you need anything... but, then I think "what if shes crazy busy and would rather be left to herself...". Now, I see that you are posting about bacon, of all things!!! So, I think that maybe you are up for a phone call... possibly a visit (and I'll bring a dinner)! Talk to you soon...

Fabulous idea. I don't buy paper towels either. I have been shaking each piece before I dish it up, but this is much better. Thanks.
