When Emahry was born I discovered the savings of making our own baby wipes. Now with two little ones I'm making even more wipes/washcloths.
I've found that flannel works the best because it is so soft and absorbent. I like to make wipes from a double layer of fabric which can easily be done with a sewing machine and a little sewing knowledge.
Start by sewing two 8" squares together with the right sides facing, being sure to leave a small opening in one side. Then simply turn right side out and whipstitch the opening closed. You can also machine stitch along the whole wipe very close to the edge for a more professional look.
If you have access to a serger making wipes is even quicker. Just serge around the square making sure to catch both pieces of fabric.
Want to make flannel wipes even cheaper? Keep an eye out at yard sales or thrift stores for flannel sheets, or search in your linen closet for flannel sheets that you aren't using anymore.

In a pinch, I've used baby washcloths, too, as wipes. Not as cheap or absorbent, but you can get packs at Walmart for 99 cents and they are still gentler and more cost effective than disposable.

ReplyDeleteI just use water. It doesn't even need to be warm. I usually just keep a small bottle with a sports nozzle filled with water in the bedroom and squeeze some water onto the wipe before using.
ReplyDeleteI take a pack of tissues, add a squeeze of baby oil, water and let it soak for a bit.
ReplyDeleteThen squeeze out excess water and voila! homemade wipes at a fraction of the cost.
Here in South Africa... my tissue wipes are R8 and proper wipes in the stores R20 - R35.
