Bible Time with Young Children

This week's Works for Me Wednesday is reversed. That means I get to ask you to give me ideas to solve a problem.

Here's our dilemma:

We want to teach our children about the Bible from a very early age. We want to make Bible time interesting, but also extremely accurate. We would like to incorporate hands-on activities and scripture memorization. We do not want to have to purchase any books.
So, how would you incorporate a meaningful Bible time for young children with these guidelines? We appreciate any ideas you can give us!

Have you heard of www.christianpreschoolprintables.com or www.lapbooklessons.com? I don't use them like I wish I could but one of my friends uses the lapbooks for wednesday teaching with preschoolers...my four year old loves them!

Great question! My girls are a little older now, so we normally read from a devotional book or scripture passage and then discuss it, but I would love to hear what others suggest for very young children.

There is so much you can do with what you have on hand. I try to read straight from the Bible to my kids whenever I can. I also supplement with Bible books from the library. There are some really great accurate story books in the non-fiction section of our library if you are willing to skim ahead of time.

We have frequently printed Bible pages off of the internet to color.

Also, ask around. You don't want to purchase materials, but how about borrowing them? The Hide 'Em In Your Heart CDs are excellent for Bible memory! We also like the Bible memory and coloring books from Rod and Staff (a Mennonite published and SUPER cheap!).

You never know what will catch a small child's interest so try anything. Sing praise songs and motion songs throughout the day...talk about Bible stories...memorize short passages together...make it fun!

We use "our Family Ways"
It is a devotional I purchased via internet home school site. I did a post on it last week. I have a 8 and an 11. I used it once when they were 3 and 5.
They color an image (I copy it on my copier) while we do the family way #1 is "love the Lord your God with all ...." then it has a character virtue, and a scripture. ON my side of the flip chart is a 5 day 15 minute apx devotional that asks a question pertains, and a time for them to explore there own thought. (sit on your hands and listen to them.) then it goes into another reference that answers the question per passage, ends with a specific prayer time.
The post I did was done within a week.

Allyson, I tried e-mailing you, but it was returned saying it was undeliverable. (?) Anyway, Brian and I organize the clothing swap. We've been doing it for 3-4 years now. We usually have a great turn-out, though it varies depending on the weather, etc...I'd say the best time to come is around 11 when lots of people have brought clothes but the things aren't picked over yet.
