NaturOli Soap Nuts Review PLUS 50% OFF Liquid Soap Nuts Detergent

It's amazing how God supplies everything we need within his beautiful creation!

Our family has been using soap nuts to clean our laundry for almost a year now and we continue to be amazed at how this simple dried shell can so effectively clean all of our messes. Soap nuts are a wonderfully natural way to clean laundry.

Soap nuts grow on trees and do not contain any harmful chemicals or additives. Soap nuts are the dried shells from the soapberry. These shells contain a substance called saponin that produces a soaping effect. Saponin is a 100% natural alternative to chemical laundry detergents. Soap nuts also contain a natural fabric softener.

Soap nuts have been used for centuries throughout the world as laundry cleaners, body soap, and for everyday household cleaning. They are 100% natural, chemical-free, frangrance-free, biodegradable and hypoallergenic. The cost per load when using soap nuts is also very low.

To use soap nuts in the wash you simply place the dried shells in a small bag and toss it into the wash machine with your dirty laundry. As the soap nuts are aggitated in the washer the Saponin is released and circulates to clean you laundry. There are very little to no suds produced by soap nuts, but you can be sure that they are working when your clothes come out smelling completely clean. Soap nuts are also absolutely ideal for High Effeciency (HE) and all front loading washers.

You can reuse a handful of nuts for 5 or more loads, depending on water temperature. Once you are finished with the soap nuts they can then be added to your compost. Most soap nut orders come with a reusable muslin bag which you use to place the nuts in and then throw in the washer.

Because soap nut leave behind no residue or harsh chemicals they are a perfect choice for washing clothes for little ones or anyone with sensitive skin. We use soap nuts for all of our laundry and love the fact that we are protecting our skin from irritation while also choosing an evironmentally friendly method of washing our clothes.

Soap nuts can also be used to make safe and natural cleaners for general household use, windows & glass, dishwashers, hands, jewelry, steam cleaning carpets, pets and shampoo.

We have tried soap nuts from a few different companies. In particular Maggie's Soap Nuts and NaturOli. We cannot even compare these two companies. Maggie’s are packaged overseas and arrived all sticky inside of a plastic bag, with some broken nuts. On the other hand, NaturOli’s are carefully inspected and packaged in the States without the use of plastic and are completely dried making them much nicer to handle. NaturOli's soap nuts are also more reasonably priced.

The NaturOli brand of soap nuts are the best priced soap nuts we have found. If you buy it in larger quantities ($48.85 for 640 loads), you are spending around $0.076 per load! You can also purchase NaturOli's soap nuts in smaller quantities, which will be around $0.12 per load. As an added bonus you are able to save additional money since there is no need for dryer sheets or fabric softeners.

From our experience, NaturOli's soap nut are definitely the most natural and frugal laundry detergent option on the market.
How about you? What frugal or natural products do you use to clean your laundry or home? We'd love to hear your ideas and suggestions.

Also, have you ever tried soap nuts? Which brands? What has your experience been?

Keep an eye out for our review of NaturOli’s liquid soap nut detergent, called EXTREME 18X Soap Nuts Liquid Concentrate, in the next week or so.

EXTREME 18X has just won its second “Green Dot Award” for the "unprecedented reduction of the carbon footprint, toxic chemicals and waste products created by the manufacture, packaging and transport of detergent products."

To celebrate this award, NaturOli is offering all EXTREME 18x liquid detergent at 50% off the retail price! With this sale you can purchase the 3 pack of EXTREME 18X for only $30.75. This package also comes with 3 soap nuts sample packs, giving you a total of over 300 loads of laundry. That's less than $0.11 per load for a completely natural and safe detergent.

This is a great time to try it or stock up. Head over to NaturOli and check out the remarkable savings here.

This celebration sale ends March 1, 2010.

Review & Giveaway: Booger Butts {closed}

As we approached the birth of our newest little bundle of joy we realized that we were seriously lacking in our size small AIO diapers.

We love the convenience of AIO diapers for when we're away from home, but only had a few in our diaper stash.

We were very happy when Anne, creative mastermind behind Booger Butts, agreed to send us a small AIO diaper and two mama pads to review.

Anne works full time as a Chicago hotel chef, but loves to relax and unwind after work by sewing items for her shop.

"Booger Butts Diapers consist of baby flannel outside layer, PUL (polyurethane Laminate) sandwiched layer and a baby-flannel layer close to the skin. The sewn inner liner is made from layers of terry cloth. The legs and back have elastic and the closures are touch tape (velcro). The diaper also includes laundry tabs. These will ensure that the diaper will not stick to everything in the washer/dryer."

These AIO diapers are very reasonably priced at $7.25 (XS, S, M) and $8.25 (L). You can also upgrade your diaper to a Zorb inner layer for an additional $1.

I had never heard of Zorb, but Anne sent me some information along with a small scrap so that I could see what was on the inside of our new AIO. The fabric itself looks and feels similar to felt.

"Zorb contains only tangled fibers from bamboo/cotton/viscose and poly micro fiber, the same fibers found in virtually every AIO diaper on the market - nothing else. Zorb had non-allergenic fibers that are durable and easy to sanit
ize. Zorb is manufactured in the USA and Canada in modern facilities that are safe and friendly for workers and the environment."

To get the same absorbency, as two layers of Zorb, you would need:

- 8 layers of flannel
- 6 layers of French terry

- 5 layers of cotton fleece, or
- 4 layers of sherpa

Therefore, the Zorb inner layer provides a lot of absorbency while helping to keep the diaper trim.

We love the look and feel of this Booger Butts AIO diaper. We've been very please with its construction and absorbency. We have had very little leaking around the legs, which I'm sure will completely disappear as Eliya grows into the diaper a little more. (The size small is actually for babies around the 10 pound mark and Eliya is only weighing in at about 7 pounds so far.)

We would recommend Booger Butts' AIO diapers for anyone who is looking for quality and affordability in cloth diapering.

I have also been very pleased with the mama pads that Anne sent me to try out. For those who may not know, mama pads are simply washable and reusable menstrual pads. By using mama pads you can reduce the cost of buying expensive feminine products every month while also reducing the amount of waste you contribute to our landfills. An added bonus is that cloth mama pads don't contain the potentially harmful chemicals of their disposable counterparts.

Booger Butts mama pads are 12 inches long by 3.5 wide and designed for medium to heavy flow. I used these pads within a week of having Eliya and they worked wonderfully. The top fabric is cotton with a Zorb inner layer and PUL backing. Booger Butts mama pads have snap closures.

I was a little unsure of how the mama pads would stay put without an adhesive strip, but the shape and snap closures help to keep them in place nicely. The inner Zorb layer also provides great absorbency while keeping the pads thinner than many disposables I've tried in the past.

Booger Butts also carries wet bags, wipes, diaper inserts, and cloth diaper fabric.

Here are some more of our favorite things from Booger Butts. Simply click on each picture to view the listing or browse through the entire shop.

Not Me! Monday

Disclaimer:
In case you are unfamiliar with Not Me! Monday, and to avoid any misunderstandings of the following, please know that everything below that I "did not do" was, if fact, done by me. You see, "Not Me! Monday was born out of a desire to admit some of [our] imperfections and reveal a few moments [we'd] rather forget." Thanks for understanding.

This past week I did call my midwives' office to reschedule my 7-10 day postpardum visit. There was no way I was taking all three little ones with me by myself. I also did jump at the opportunity for an appointment that same day bacause I knew Tim would be able to watch the two oldest so the baby and I could go to the appointment by ourselves.

However, I did not forget to think about the fact that an appoinment that afternoon would mean no time to shower before going. I also did not forget that at the time I had not shaved my legs since my last prenatal appointment almost three weeks prior. No, not me! First, I would never be that scatterbrained and second, I would never go that long without shaving my legs. I always shave my legs whenever I shower, which of course I have time and energy to do every day.

I also did not feel embarrassed when I showed up for my appointment and discovered I would be seen by one of the student nurses, no not me. She of course is a pretty, early twenty-something girl who I'm sure showers everyday and always has cleanly shaven legs. But I wouldn't worry about that, not me. I'm too self confident to let her shaven legs and daily showered body make me feel uncomfortable about mine.

Head over to MckMama's Not Me! Monday to see what everyone else has not been doing this past week.

Before you go, why don't you leave me a comment letting me know I'm not alone when it comes to having faults as a wife and mom. Thanks!

Our Change of Game Plan

Leading up to the birth of our newest addition, Eliya, when people discovered that we would soon have three children under the age of three we were generally met with two responses ~ blank stares and the inevitable, "You'll have your hands full."

However, one person told Tim that when the baby was born we would have to change our defense strategy from man-to-man defense to zone defense.

Considering that all I know about these terms come from the two years I played JV basketball in high school, I decided a refresher was in order.
Man-to-Man Defense
–noun Sports.
a method of defense in team sports, esp. in basketball and football, in which each member of the defensive team is designatedto guard a particular member of the offensive team.

Zone Defense
–noun Sports.
a method of defense, esp. in basketball and football, in which each member of the defensive team guards a specified portion of the playing area.
(definitions from dictionary.com)
This has actually been a great analogy to our new life as the parents of three children.

No longer can we simply "divide and conquer" by distributing responsibility for one child to each parent. Since we are now outnumbered by our children, our tactics must change.

However, I hate saying that we are on zone defense, since defense implies that we are only reacting to our children instead of actively leading them. So instead of zone defense I'm saying we are on zone offense. I know it doesn't match the sports analogy, but I'd like to think that for the most part Tim and I are in charge of the kids and not the other way around, although some days it sure does feel like it.

So, with our new zone defense offense we train and instruct the children based on relative location or specific guidelines. Thankfully, when Tim is home we are all together for the most part. However, when the children need different things from us instead of, "Can you please help Emahry clean up while I take Jonathan to the potty?" it's now "Can you watch the girls, while I brush Jonathan's teeth?" or "Would you mind taking the two oldest to the playground, so I can lay down with the baby?"

This new approach has been working well for us. Since Eliya was born, Tim has decided to fully take on the responsibility of getting up at night with the two older children. This allows me to worry only about the baby and to get a little more rest. Tim's initiative and strong desire to be involved with our children has been such a blessing to me and has helped to make the transition to a family of five much smoother for all of us.

Now if only I could grow an extra arm (or two) so that I could manage as well when he is not at home :)

What are some ways that your family helps distribute responsibility so that no one person is overwhelmed or gets burned out?

Endless Gifts

Daily I'm surrounded by wonderful gifts from God, yet many days I choose to see the disappointments instead of the blessings.

Today I choose to be a cheerful recipient, a joy finder, a gift counter.

#1. That my husband, Tim, is strong enough to make tough decisions and lead our family through difficult times...

...but gentle enough to rock and cuddle a newborn and read countless books to our children.

#2. The safe and healthy birth of our newest addition, Eliya.

#3. My wonderful birth coach, Tim. I couldn't have done it without you, honey.

#4. A midwife and nurse who helped make the experience almost enjoyable.

#5. Having my sister nearby to watch Emahry and Jonathan while I was in labor.

#6. Being able to return home, to my family and my own bed, only six hours after Eliya was born.

#7. Friends who passed on a car seat their little girl had outgrown so we didn't have to purchase one.

#8. Delicious taco soup and a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies delivered by a friend.

#9. A beautiful and cozy knit snuggle sack made by our neighbor.

#10. Children who adore their baby sister.

#11. Capturing a yawn.

#12. Tim getting up with Jonathan throughout the night, without complaint, so I can get a little more rest.

#13. The view from my pillow after a much needed nap.

Scandeez Review & Giveaway {closed}

Modern design for kids with a Scandinavian flair perfectly describes Connie's Etsy shop, Scandeez. This shop is a treasure chest of beautiful and unique items for babies and children.

Connie has been crafting since she was a little girl. Her mother actually taught her to knit, crochet, and embroider when Connie was only 4 years old! Connie also loves color and using natural fibers and fabrics.

I was first drawn to Scandeez by Connie's adorable leather baby moccasins. I was absolutely delighted when Connie agreed to have her baby moks featured on A Heart for Home.

Because all of Scandeez's baby moks are absolutely beautiful, I asked Connie to just surprise us with a gender neutral pair of moks for Jonathan. Needless to say, I was excited to open the package when it arrived. We definitely were not disappointed.

Inside the professional quality packaging were an adorable pair of gray leather elephant moks. The first thing I did was smell the little slippers. Oh, the smell of genuine leather.

These moks are made from super soft leather. They have an elasticized top for a comfy fit and to make it more difficult for babies to kick them off. In fact, it took Jonathan quite a while to figure out how to take these off by himself.

Jonathan likes his new moks and I've even caught Emahry trying to squeeze into them on quite a few occassions. She likes to call them Jonathan's elephant shoes. The leather soles make them great for babies and toddlers developing feet and give a good amount of grip when walking on slippery floors. The detailed stitching of the sole design makes these a truely unique and eye catching addition to any outfit.

Scandeez's leather moks are available in a wide variety of colors and designs and come in sizes newborn to 24 months.

Scandeez also carries a vast assortment of other quality handmade items for babies and children, such as burp cloth and onesie sets, adorable tops, blankies and bibs, wet bags, fun and functional pants, and more.

Here are some more of our favorite things from Scandeez. Simply click on each picture to view the listing or browse through the entire shop.

Our Newest Addition

We may be a little more scarce than usual for a little while.

We've been busy going from this...

...to this...

For those who read my Not Me! Monday post, I didn't actually try any of the methods of inducing that I read. Thankfully, this was all in God's perfect timing ☺

As a side note, in the first photo I was actually already in labor. I asked Tim to get the camera out of the truck and take a picture because I realized I didn't have any later pregnancy photos.

We'll get more photos and at least a condensed birth story posted sometime this coming week...hopefully.

Introducing...
Eliya Rose

Born February 9th, 2010
At 8:45 AM
5 pounds 14 ounces
19 1/2 inches long

We are all home and tired, but doing well. Please, keep our family in your prayers as we adjust to life with our newest blessing. Thank you!

Not Me! Monday

Disclaimer:
In case you are unfamiliar with Not Me! Monday, and to avoid any misunderstandings of the following, please know that everything below that I "did not do" was, if fact, done by me. You see, Not Me! Monday was born out of a desire to admit some of our imperfections and reveal a few moments we'd rather forget. Thanks for understanding.

This past week I did not resort to sounding just like my mother by responding to Emahry's constant questioning of "why?" by telling her, "because I said so." I would never say that, no not me!

I also did not browse the Internet for natural ways to induce labor because I am so ready to have this baby. I would never do that, not me. I am way too patient and believe too much in my body's own timing to try to hurry along the inevitable.

Finally, I did not stay in bed almost an extra hour this morning and let Tim make and feed the kids breakfast before he had to go and do school work all day long. No, not me, I'm way too thoughtful and value my husband's time too much to let him do that.

Head over to MckMama's Not Me! Monday to see what everyone else has not been doing this past week.

Gourmet Drizzle Popcorn ~ A Valentine's Day Treat

From the Archives:

I thought with Valentine's Day quickly approaching, that this would be the perfect time to share this wonderful recipe with you again.

You could even make this delicious popcorn more festive by experimenting with red and pink candies, sprinkles, etc.

If you've ever been fortunate enough to try Dale and Thomas' Drizzlecorn than you know how delicious it is. We normally are given some around the holidays, but go without the rest of the year because it is so expensive.

Well, for Valentine's Day, I decided to make Tim some peanut butter, white chocolate, toffee drizzle popcorn. It was a huge success! We've actually made it a couple of times since and it never lasts very long :)

Gourmet Drizzle Popcorn is so easy to make and is very easy to customize according to your favorite flavors.

Here are just a few examples to get your ideas flowing and your mouth watering:

Chocolate Praline (melted chocolate chips, crushed candied pecans),

White Chocolate Almond (melted white chocolate, slivered or chopped almonds),

Double Peanut Butter Crunch (melted peanut butter chips, crushed or chopped peanuts),

Heath Bar (melted chocolate chips, toffee bits),

Double Chocolate Delight (melted dark chocolate chips, melted milk chocolate chips),

Chocolate Butterscotch (melted chocolate chips, melted butterscotch chips),

Night and Day (melted dark chocolate chips, melted white chocolate chips),

Marvelous Mint (melted Andes mints),

Caramel Pecan (melted caramel, chopped pecans)

Here's our recipe for Gourmet Drizzle Popcorn.

We love this popcorn. In fact, this is what our batch of drizzle popcorn normally looks like by the time it's ready to be stored. :)

Monkeying Around

Emahry has a new thing for monkeys. She talks (in length) about every monkey she sees, whether it's in a picture, on a shirt, or adorning a bag.

So, she was very excited when these pink monkey PJs arrived in the mail from Papa & Meme.

In the pictures, she's trying to count all the monkeys. Oh, and she also wanted to show Meme a picture of her braids :)

Does your child have a favorite animal or theme that they go crazy for? We'd love to hear abour it, just leave us a comment.
