Okay, so I wouldn't exactly define this as a health food.
But, at least it's made with natural and chemical free ingredients.
I discovered the original recipe at Small Notebook, who found it in May Dacyczyn's The Complete Tightwad Gazette.
I adapted the recipe slightly to include a more natural sweetener.
Healthy(er) Homemade Chocolate Syrup
1/2 cup cocoa powder (naturally unsweetened)
1 cup water
2 cups Sucanat (or Turbinado Sugar)
1/8 tsp salt
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1. Mix the cocoa powder and water in a medium saucepan (don't choose the tiny pan). Heat on medium and stir to dissolve.
2. Add the Sucanat and stir to dissolve.
3. Boil for 5 minutes over medium heat. You don't need to stir the entire time, but stay close by and keep an eye on it or it'll boil over quickly. Update: For the second batch, I boiled for 10 minutes (stirring frequently) and the syrup turned out even thicker, great for drizzling. I think I'll stick with the amount of time from now on.
4. Remove from heat and stir in the salt and vanilla.
5. Let the syrup cool, pour into a clean glass jar, and store in the refrigerator. I placed my syrup in a glass canning jar, but Rachel used the super cute flip-top glass bottle pictured above (perfect for gift giving).
6. This should keep for several months (I doubt mine will have the chance to last that long).
This syrup is deliciously rich with no funny aftertaste or artificial ingredients.
It definitely is a finer thing that works for me (and is frugal to boot!)
How would you use this delicious and healthy(er) chocolate syrup in your home?

Thanks for posting this recipe for us. My son loves chocolate milk, but I hate giving him chocolate that is full of artificial stuff.
ReplyDeleteI was just looking at these syrups on the shelf, and walking away from the ingredients list. Thanks for this timely recipe!
