Heroes & Villains of the Bible Book Review

We recently read through Tommy Nelson’s children’s Bible storybook, Heroes and Villains of the Bible.

Heroes and Villains of the Bible is a collection of true-life adventures of real people form the Bible. Some of these people were warriors for God while others fought against God, his ways, and his people.

This children’s Bible storybook contains 50 stories with actual Bible text from the International Children’s Bible version.

Each story also contains an introduction that establishes important events surrounding each section of scripture. The end of each story has thoughts and suggestions to help readers relate the stories to life today and to ultimately point children to God—the greatest hero of all!

We really enjoyed the Bible overview as the storybook told of people such as Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Ruth, Haman, Herod, Peter, Stephen and many others. I also liked that the heroes were visually represented in the table of contents and throughout their chapter with the head of a lion while the villains were represented by a snake.

I thought the introduction and summary that accompanied each chapter was well thought out and helpful in making the stories easier to apply to everyday life.

I am not a huge fan of the International Children’s Bible translation, but I can see how it would make the stories easier to understand if a child were to read them on their own. Personally, I’d rather read from the same version we use and then answer any questions that our children have.

I did not like the digital illustration, but the kids liked them and I think they definitely make the storybook more appealing to older children, which is good since the illustrations of so many Bible storybooks are considered too babyish by many older children. The illustrations are also a little sparse with only one picture for most of the stories. The stories range from 2-6 pages. Some of the shorter stories have no picture at all.

Overall, we enjoyed this book and we will be keeping it in our library to refer to as we study various people from the Bible.

Kandy Apple Kids {Review & Giveaway}

Review: We received a beautiful One Size minky diaper from Kandy Apple Kids as well as an adorable stuffed daschund to review. 

As soon as we opened the fluffy mail I was impressed by the quality and workmanship (workwomanship) of both items. The quality of stitching and care to detail is apparent when you see Kari's items up close.

I also love the color combinations. They are bright and fun, perfect for my energetic little ones.

Since we received this diaper, it has been a go to diaper for Eliya. We've used the diaper away from home several times and have even employed it as a night time diaper of several occasions. I absolutely love how soft and cuddly the minky inner and outer fabrics are.

I also love that we've had no issues with leaking or wicking with Kari's diaper.

Since this is a One Size diaper it fits both of our diaper wearer. It converts between sizes by a snap down rise. The snap placement allows this diaper to have three different rise options and multiple tummy and thigh settings.

Kari's diapers are made using the Nykibaby Pattern, and fit most babies and toddlers from birth to potty training, approximately 8-40 pounds. The unique welt-style pocket opening makes the pocket easy to stuff.

I like the fit of this diaper on both Amelia (3 months) and Eliya (21 months). Although I do like the fit on Eliya a little better.

The only thing that I didn't completely love is the micorfiber towel insert. Not that there is anything wrong with the insert, I just personally prefer the microfiber inserts that are sewn instead of having to fold the insert before stuffing it into the pocket. Like I said this is just my personal preference.

Kari's stuffed daschund could not be more loved at our home. Since his arrival, the kids have been taking turns having him sleep in their beds. I don't think he's spent very many nights in the toy basket at all.

The adorable daschund is bright and cheerful and exceptionally well made. It actually took me a few minutes to find where Kari had finished him up by hand sewing the last little section closed.

Kari's stuffed daschunds are approximately 19 inches long. Their bodies are made from 100% cotton with polyester/minky ears. These stuffed toys would make great Christmas gifts for the little ones in your life.

Great Christmas Gift: Pick and Draw Game {Review & Giveaway}

Introduction: Rich Davis is the talented illustrator who created Pick and Draw. You might recognize his work from the following children's books:  Firefighters to the Rescue (one of Jonathan's favorites!), Scat, Cats!, When Tiny Was Tiny, Tiny's Bath, Tiny Goes to the Library, Tiny the Snow Dog, Tiny Goes Camping, and Tiny on the Farm.

Rich originally created Pick and Draw to be used in his presentations to kids at public libraries and schools. Review: Rich generously sent us a copy of Pick and Draw to review. I was a little concerned that our kids would be far too young to play the game, but Rich gave me some ideas for using this game with even very young children. So far, we've used the Pick and Draw cards in our preschool workboxes and I've used them in some one-on-one time with Emahry.

To play you simply pick one card from each category: Face, Nose, Eyes, Mouth, and Hair. Then you draw each piece to make a unique cartoon face. Depending on the size and placement of each component the face can look completely different than another face drawn using the same exact cards. Here's one of Emahry and Jonathan's creations alongside one of mine using the same five cards.

After we make our faces, we've been talking about them, giving them names and telling each other what they like to do. This is great practice for story telling and later story writing. Emahry and Jonathan have been coming up with some very funny stories.

We're even planning on taking Pick and Draw to my parents' house the next time the family gets together for some whole family fun. I know it'll be great!

Pick and Draw may even be going into some family gift baskets this Christmas. It's a great gift for families and children of all ages!

Jeremy Riddle's Furious CD {Review & Giveaway}

Vineyard Worship artist and worship leader Jeremy Riddle has announced the release of his new studio album entitled Furious.  The album will be released this Tuesday, September 20 via NewDay Distribution. 

We almost passed on the opportunity we were given to review this new CD. Mostly because we didn't recognize the artist's name. I'm so thankful I took the time to listen to a few clips of his music. After listening to just two songs I knew we'd love the new CD.

Jeremy describes Furious saying, “It’s hard to come up with words that depict the magnitude of Christ’s love – the depth and width of it. Furious doesn’t work outside of the context of love; we tend to translate the word as angry, but I see it as a super-powerful force; stronger, deeper, broader than our vocabulary can fully describe."

Jeremy Riddle is a former Junior High youth minister and touring worship leader who is now serving as worship community pastor at Bethel Church in Redding, California. 

“My wife (Katie) and I have always had a heart to serve the local church and never wanted to do the full-time travel thing for very long, so it felt like a good time to transition into something different,” Jeremy says. “I’ve developed such an appreciation for the fruit that has been sowed from my life – personally and artistically – by being part of a local community.”

Tim and I have really enjoyed Jeremy Riddle's CD Furious. Jeremy's musical talent is clear but his songs also have the wonderful ability to help us contemplate the scope of God's goodness and prepare our hearts to worship God through our daily life tasks.

These "flat" diapers are actually about the size of a standard prefold but are the same thickness throughout. This allows them to be pad folded in either direction and placed into a diaper cover.

These diapers are extremely soft and fluffy. I wish all of our towels and washcloths felt like these diapers!

The Flats and Hand Washing Challenge Begins Today!

Our family will officially begin the Flats and Handwashing Challenge organized by Kim at Dirty Diaper Laundry today, although we've been gearing up for the challenge by using our flats almost exclusively while at home.

If you haven't heard of the challenge, here's a little information from a previous post:

This challenge was started to raise awareness of the extremely frugal option of flat diapers. The hand washing aspect is to show that even families who do not own a washer and dryer can successfully cloth diaper their babies for very little upfront cost.

We are participating in this challenge so that we can help spread the word about how inexpensive cloth diapering can be, even for those who do not own a washer and dryer.

Review:  Niki sent our family 4 of her diapers to review. These "flat" diapers are sewn from unbleached muslin which is a flatter weave than the standard birdseye cotton that most flats are made from.

However, Niki's diapers have one huge advantage over regular flats. Niki has taken all of the guesswork and trouble out of folding the flat diaper while still maintaining the benefits of thorough cleaning and quick drying.

When this "flat" is unfolded it is already sewn into the triangle shape with the middle square ready to be folded to complete the origami fold. This definitely cuts down on the time it takes to get your diapers ready. Also once the center is folded this diaper performs like a typical flat, being absorbent in the middle where it's needed yet being very trim at the sides.

We've been using these "flats" for a couple of weeks now. To help the rise fit Eliya better I simply fold down the top edge of the triangle before I place her on top. I've been using a snappi to secure the diaper before rolling the leg edges in and covering the diaper with a waterproof diaper cover.

In preparation for the Flats and Handwashing Challenge I've also hand washed and air dried these flats on several occasions. The way Niki has sewn the diapers makes them very easy to get clean and allows them to dry quickly like a standard flat diaper.

Overall, we are really enjoying these "Not JUST a Flat Diapers" from Niki and NCantrell.
